Studying English in the UK: FAQs

If you’re thinking of coming to study English in England, it’s normal that you’ll have quite a few questions. We’ll answer the most common ones here.

Where will I stay?

People have different preferences and requirements so there is a range of options for accommodation when you study English in the UK. You’ll have the potential options of a home-stay, residential housing or self-catering.

How will I get to classes?

Obviously this will depend on where you are staying but your school will make sure you can get there by bus or train, on foot or by bike.

Will someone meet me at the airport?

Yes. Check with your school before you set off but someone should meet you at the airport and take you to your accommodation.

Do I need a visa?

If you’re an EU citizen, you won’t need a visa to study English in the UK. However, non-EU citizens will need to apply to the British Embassy in their home country for a visa. Your English school can provide you with a visa support letter.

What if I don’t like my accommodation?

If you don’t like where you are staying it will usually be possible to change your accommodation. There may be delays during busy periods but your school should do what it can to accommodate your request.

Can I change course?

Yes, if you need to change your course you should be able to. Talk to your course leader who will be able to help arrange this for you or deal with any problems that you have.

What kind of courses are available?

There is a massive range of courses available for those wishing to study English in the UK.

For adults, there are courses on general English as well as business English. There are also teacher training courses and TOEFL programmes.

Junior English courses are aimed specifically at young people. The content, style and activities are specifically targeted. Family study holidays in the UK are also available so that whole families can study together.

In addition university prep courses are on offer for those wishing to go to university in the UK.

When do the courses run?

Many English courses run throughout the year, with various start dates. Certain courses only run in the summer.
